Air TravelAirline PoliciesPlanningSun Country Airlines - Learn their Baggage Policy

Sun Country is one of the most favored airlines in the US when it comes to passengers looking for ultra-low-cost flight options. The airline currently operates in 172 destinations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. However, regardless of their low costs, they still have very strict baggage policies.

Passengers flying with Sun Country Airlines can bring one carry-on and one personal item for free. There is no free checked bag allowance and fees range from $30 to $40 for the first two bags. Standard fees will apply when bags exceed the size and weight limit of 62 linear inches and 50 lbs

In this article, we’ll go into detail as we explore Sun Country’s baggage policy. You’ll learn more about their size limits, the items that don’t count toward your carry-on baggage, and what you’ll be paying when your bags don’t meet the size requirements. So, stick around because you don’t want to miss anything.

Checked baggage

Unfortunately, Sun Country doesn’t let you bring any checked baggage for free, unless:

  • You hold a full-fare First Class ticket or you upgraded your ticket to First Class (2 bags for free)
  • You are an active-duty member of the US Military traveling on orders (2 bags for free)
  • You are an Elite Member of Ufly Rewards (2 bags for free)
  • You hold a Sun Country Airlines Visa Signature Card (1 bag for free)
  • You booked a flight and hotel package to the Caribbean/ Mexico/ Costa Rica through Sun Country Vacations (1 bag for free)
  • You are an unaccompanied minor (1 bag for free)

If this criteria doesn’t apply to you, you’ll be subjected to the airline’s non-refundable standard checked baggage fees. The first two bags will cost you $30 each if you pay the fee when making your booking, and $40 each if you wait to pay at the airport.

Carry-ons and personal items

The only things that Sun Country allows you to bring at no charge are carry-ons and personal items. However, because of the availability of space on the aircrafts, there are some policies in place to regulate these items.

Carry-on size limits and fees

Your carry-on bag should be able to fit under the seat in front of you. If it doesn’t, you’ll be charged a fee to store them in the overhead locker. These fees are as follows:

  • When making your booking: $30
  • At the airport: $40

These bags aren’t allowed to exceed the size limit of 24 x 16 x 11 inches (61 x 40 x 28 cm), including the wheels, handles, and any other parts that stick out. The maximum weight limit is 35 lbs (15.9 kg).

Personal item size limits

You can bring a personal item on board the aircraft for free. This item should fit under the seat in front of yours and it can’t exceed the size limit of 17 x 13 x 9 inches (43 x 33 x 23 cm).

Personal items include diaper bags, purses, laptop bags, and other items of a personal nature that you may need during the flight. Bulkhead seats don’t have space underneath, so you’ll be required to store your personal items in the overhead bin when the aircraft takes off and lands.

Free items

There are some items that do not count toward your carry-on, personal item, or checked bag allowance. These items can be brought on board at no cost and they include:

  • Jackets, coats, and other outerwear items
  • Food and beverages for the flight
  • Mobility devices, including wheelchairs, canes, and crutches
  • FAA-approved child restraint systems for the flight

Overweight policy

Sun Country has a strict policy when it comes to checking baggage that doesn’t meet the weight requirements. If you bring a bag that doesn’t fit the 50 lb (22.7 kg) limit, you’ll be charged an additional overweight fee. The fees that you could be looking at are as follows:

  • Bags between 51 and 60 lbs (23.1-27.2 kg): $20 per bag
  • Bags between 61 and 100 lbs (27.7-45.4 kg): $60 per bag
  • Bags that weigh more than 100 lbs (45.4 kg): not accepted
  • Bags that weigh more than 70 lbs (31.8 kg) on flights to and from Jamaica and Puerto Rico: not accepted

Oversize policy

Due to the limited space and influx of passengers that choose to fly with Sun Country, they have size limits in place to ensure that everyone’s baggage is treated fairly. Oversized bags are classified as checked bags that exceed the size limit of 62 linear inches (157.5 cm). You’ll be charged a standard fee of $100 for every bag that falls into this category.

Excess baggage

If you’re planning on bringing more than two bags that’ll need to be checked at the airport, you’ll be required to pay an excess baggage fee. Sun Country charges a flat rate of $60 per bag for every extra bag that you bring (3+).

Sports equipment policy

If you’re flying with Sun Country to save on travel costs for a sport-related trip, you need to know what’s allowed and what isn’t. Since the airline is based at the Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport in Minnesota, the chances are good that you may be traveling for golf.

You should know that you can bring a single golf travel bag weighing no more than 50 lbs (22.7 kg) for a standard fee of $30. For a mere $30 extra, your bag can weigh up to 99 lbs (44.9 kg). In terms of size, your golf bag should be within 62 linear inches (157.5 cm), or you’ll be required to pay $100 for bags smaller than 110 linear inches (279.4 cm).

However, these are just the basics. You can read more about the airline’s golf clubs policy in our comprehensive article. Oh, and don’t forget that traveling by air can be hard on your clubs, so remember to have a look at our golf travel bag recommendations for optimal safety.
