American Airlines shows its appreciation to all of the country’s biggest heroes and those who fight to give us the freedom to fly. A simple thank you goes a long way but saving on their travels goes even further, which is why AA offers many military discounts. The airline makes provisions to let military personnel and their families fly at a lower rate, check their baggage for free, and even relax in the airport lounges at no cost.
All US military personnel and their direct dependents flying with AA save 10% on their ticket fares when booking through the Veterans Advantage program. These passengers can also bring up to 5 checked bags for free, which may exceed the size limits without incurring additional charges.
In this article about American Airlines’ military discounts, you can expect to find all of the information that you need about flying with this airline as a member of the US Military. From baggage allowances to saving on ticket fares and bringing trained working dogs, it’s all right here.
Discount on ticket fares
According to their website, AA offers special government and military fares in some markets. They don’t disclose the discount amount or the markets where these fares apply but you can call Reservations for more information.
Veterans Advantage program
What they do disclose is their participation in the Veterans Advantage program, which allows US Military personnel and their dependents to save on flights and vacation packages. This program applies to all US Military personnel, including veterans and active-duty members.
The main benefit of this VetRewards offer is 10% off American Airlines vacation packages. This applies to hotels, rental cars, theme park passes, and sightseeing tours in any of the following destinations:
- Asia & Pacific
- Central America
- Middle East
- South America
Plus, military personnel and their families earn bonus AAdvantage Miles when they take advantage of this offer.
Complimentary bag allowance
AA allows active-duty military personnel traveling on orders and their dependents to check up to 5 bags free of charge. These bags can weigh up to 100 lbs each, with a size limit of 126 linear inches. This height and size allowance is more than that for other passengers, with the added bonus that it won’t incur any additional charges.
Active-duty US military personnel and their dependents traveling for personal reasons or leisure are also given a baggage allowance. These passengers can check up to 3 bags that weigh up to 50 lbs each, with a size limit of 62 linear inches.
*Military personnel need to show their Military ID to claim this allowance, while their dependents need to show their Military Dependent ID.
**Linear inches is counted by adding the height, length, and width of the bag.
Other military benefits
To make traveling even better for military personnel and veterans, American Airlines offers even more great benefits. These benefits include the following:
Active-duty members traveling in uniform can access the Admirals Club and all other American Airlines airport lounges for free.
Military personnel typically travel with gear that makes boarding a plane a little harder. To accommodate this, AA allows all active duty military personnel with a valid US Military ID to board the plane early. They will be called to board with Group 1, which consists of first-class passengers.
Trained service animals
Military personnel flying with American Airlines can bring trained active military dogs in the cabin for free, provided that they are on official duty with written documents. Dogs working in detection, security enforcement and combat need to be listed when booking the ticket.
Working dogs that are trained to attack must be checked at the ticket counter and restrictions and fees may apply. Only active-duty US Military and US State Department Foreign Service personnel traveling on official orders are allowed to check dogs. There is a restriction of up to 2 pets and they need to meet the destination’s age and health requirements.
These working dogs will only be checked if:
- The capacity hasn’t been met yet, as pets are checked on a first-come basis.
- The passenger contacted Reservations at least 48 hours before the flight.
- The passenger can show their official orders at the ticket counter.
- The passenger can provide the dog’s health certificate issued within 10 days of the flight.
Military discount criteria
The different types of military discounts offered by American Airlines apply to active U.S. military personnel from any of the U.S. armed forces, including the following:
- Air Force
- Coast Guard
- Space Force
The following passengers are excluded from the military discounts:
- Those with a Civilian Military ID
